Budget pistols can get a bad rap for fit, finish, and ergonomics, but those are areas that the STR9-F did well in. Although the workmanship and aesthetics of the pistol averaged fair to good among the test team, we found the handling and ergonomics to be good to very good. The Stoeger STR9-F is built with some similarities to both Glock and Smith & Wesson M&P pistols. It’s simple, but with a comfortable grip and good stippling texture. Some shooters found of the shape and contour of the grip to be easy to handle—and even preferable to some other stock grips. The Frame of the STR9-F features a 3-slot accessory rail, and the rounded slide has aggressive front and rear cocking serrations. Simple white 3-dot sights top it off.

Home Defense Handguns: The good news about home defense guns is that you can go as big and bulky as you want without issue. A firearm designed to be used inside the home doesn’t need to be concealed. Bigger and heavier can be good things especially when it comes to capacity and easier to deal with recoil. Range Guns: Range guns fall into a few categories, and they can be plinkers for fun, competition guns, or just an extensive collection of fun guns that mostly see life at the range.

The matte-black grips pair well with the Nitron finish that Sig used on the frame and slide. Coupled with the stout defensive sights—a square notch fixed rear and front post with illuminated dots—there’s no doubt as to the P210’s intended role. That said, it is a much more refined pistol than your run-of-the mill striker-fired polymer wonder gun. It has a lovely crisp single-action trigger and the most aesthetically appealing safety and slide lock you’ll find on any defensive handgun.

Guns for new shooters is always a very touchy subject. When I tackled the topic last year, I got hate mail for months for having the temerity to suggest that revolvers were often not the best option for new shooters. Based on mountains of empirical evidence and over 30 years as a professional instructor, my mind hasn’t changed; revolvers are still not the best answer. Neither are tiny guns, which often recoil more and are harder to handle and manipulate. Also on my No-No list are pink guns, purple guns or any cosmetic treatment that tries to “pretty up” a sub-par tool for a neophyte shooter. Finally, you won’t find bottom of the barrel crap guns on this list either. Learning how to shoot is tough, it’s tougher if your junk gun doesn’t work.
